Author visit Yassmin Abdel-Magied - 26 January 2026

This week, the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 were absolutely captivated by Yassmin Abdel- Magied, author of Silverbrook: Yumna and the Golden Horse, the first book in an exciting new series.

A dynamic and inspiring speaker, Yassmin passionately shared her life story and career journey, leaving children inspired as she spoke about achieving her dream of becoming a published author.

Yassmin’s visit this morning sparked huge excitement, with many of our children rushing to start reading her latest book straight away! We asked some children for their thoughts about Yassmin's visit.

A child in Year 6 shared, “Yassmin was so inspiring. Her talk was interesting and fun, and it was really inspiring to have a Black author visit our school. Her story was fascinating.”

A child in Year 5 added, “The characters in the book are really interesting — I can’t wait to read it! Yassmin’s career is so inspiring, especially her engineering job on an oil rig. She was the first woman in Australia to do that job, and it made me feel like I can do anything!”

The book can be purchased here: Silverbrook: Yumna and the Golden Horse by Yassmin Abdel-Magied | Waterstones

KS2 Author visit - 29 January 2025

Children in KS2 were treated to a visit from published author JJ Arcanjo.   JJ Arcanjo is the talented author of the thrilling Crookhaven series. Children listened to the story of his route to becoming a writer and had the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

Children were then able to purchase books and have them signed by the author himself.  The children were thrilled with this event and have been talking about it all week!
